Counseling Perspective

Art Therapy in Singapore

Art therapy (also called art psychotherapy) is a recognised form of psychotherapy that uses drawing, painting, collage, clay and other creative materials alongside conversation. It is delivered by a qualified art therapist or art psychotherapist and is not an art class. No artistic skill or experience is needed, and nothing you make is judged as artwork. Many clients arrive saying they cannot draw — which is not an obstacle to achieving therapeutic goals.

Working with various materials can slow things down and offer another way to explore experiences that may be difficult to put into words. An image or object can give shape to something before you have found the language for it, allowing you and your therapist to explore it together rather than holding it only internally. For some people, this can make difficult material feel more approachable than talking alone.

Who is it for?

Art therapy can be helpful for people of all ages — children, teenagers, adults and older adults. Creative processes can offer children and young people additional ways to communicate and explore feelings, while adults may find that working creatively opens up perspectives that are difficult to access through conversation alone.

Art therapy can support people experiencing trauma, grief and loss, anxiety, stress and burnout, life transitions, identity and self-esteem concerns. It may also be particularly helpful for neurodivergent clients and for people working in a second or third language, where creative expression can offer additional ways to communicate experiences and emotions.

What is a session like?

Your therapist may offer a starting point or leave the session open. You might work with creative materials for part of the session and talk throughout, or spend more time talking. You may explore the artwork you have made, what came up while making it, or something else entirely. There is no requirement to explain or interpret what you have created.

Sessions are confidential, and artwork can be stored securely or taken home, according to your preference.

Art therapy is available for individuals and small groups, in person at our Singapore locations, with approaches adapted where appropriate for online sessions.
